I’m all about names

I like names. They are very important. A name says a lot about a person, a people, an organization…

For a child, a good name (at least for boys) means growing up being teased or being honored. Joseph was a strong name in my family. Joseph was the gifted boy in the book of Genesis who, though sold into captivity by his own family, honored is father by rising up to be a great man in the king’s court and saved his people from famine. (Genesis 37:1-46:34)  My Grandfather was Joseph. He was a great example of a provider, husband and though I am sure growing up in his house was not easy, he was an honorable man who took care of business at home as well.

American. That used to be the greatest label in the world. I still think it is. It stood for hard work as pioneers of a new country and later new technologies and markets. It meant innovation in the ages of the steam engine, the automobile, the airplane, and the computer. It stands for courage and community when we came from colonies and more recently seen in our nations greatest disasters of 9/11, hurricanes  Katrina, Rita and Wilma in 2005, and so many more. It stands for generosity and compassion, as we still manage to pull together and provide a the majority of the relief efforts around the globe even to this day with 89 disasters in the US on record for 2011.

YMCA is a well-known name. Once upon a time it actually was the Young Men’s Christian Association. The Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA), was founded in In 1844 as a refuge of Bible study and prayer for young men seeking escape from the hazards of life on the streets in industrialized London, England. It has grown globally and done some amazing things in this world. I only pray that the Christ centered message is not lost.

What is my point? My point is this: This blog and well my ministry in general is focused primarily on Men’s issues. Sure I talk/rant about family, society, work, friends, etc. but it is all from a perspective of “How does my God show us to live as a men” and “How can we raise up honorable godly men in our communities”.    I can speak to younger men as I have been there. I can speak to older men because I am going there. I have a Biblical view, of all issues. That I can share, however from a personal perspective I can’t speak about women’s issues except to say my opinion based off a man’s observation and what scripture says.

That being the case I want to look at the name of the site. It is not really focused on “Asking for what we want or need anymore.” Sure it has something to do with that. But it’s more than just about asking, it’s more than just prayer. It’s about how can I, and if you are paying attention we, honor God through our work, our talents, our decisions, our attitudes. How do we honor Him with our lives in total. It’s a hard thing to think about and talk about in this age, is it not?

I have a few projects I want to start but I want a name. There are shriners, and moose, and elks, and knights, and so many other names. I pray for a label that say’s our effort, our works are for the glory of the Father.  So I am on a quest for the perfect name. One with a mission statement in its core. I looked and there are “Men’s Fraternities”, “Fathers” this and that, and even a group called “Iron Sharpens Iron”. Names matter. If not then our Lord would not have changed Jacob into Israel or Simon to Peter. To steal a quote from JFK. “Its not what our Lord can do for us, It’s what we can do for our Lord.”  It’s time for a revival everyone. And the mission field starts at home.

Hmm.   Mission: Home Front     … nah…

Please, comments are welcome and needed.   ^_^
